The Surrogates sendiri akan bersetting di tahun 2017. Di tahun tersebut, manusia hidup dalam sebuah kawasan isolasi dan hanya saling berinteraksi lewat sebuah robot yang menjadi pengganti kehadiran mereka. Suatu kejadian aneh terjadi ketika beberapa robot pengganti hancur, sekaligus membunuh manusia yang robot-robot tersebut wakilkan. Seorang polisi (Willis) melalui robot penggantinya, mencoba menyelidiki apa yang sebenarnya terjadi, ketika akhirnya sesuatu hal menghancurkan robot penggantinya.
